Think about whatever…

What am I thinking? What am I thinking! There are so many things on my mind: Thoughts of what I need to do this week, whom I should fellowship with, what I should teach/preach at church, what to write on my blog, etc. One book I’ve been reading/listening to is Getting Things Done and its basic point is to get needless things out of one’s mind. So I’ve been thinking about what I should be thinking about and what I shouldn’t be thinking about.
This week’s daily devotion covers Philippians 1 & 3 but the other two chapters are also great (don’t skip them, they’re really easy short chapters!). As I was going through chapter 4, I paused at verse 8:
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8 NIV)
Methinks this is excellent advice on what I should have on my mind and what I should not have in my mind. If my mind selectively let in only things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy…boy, I wouldn’t mind that at all! As it is, there’s so much of my memory that’s filled with unnecessary things — bits of info, [giga]bytes of regret… Sometimes I wish I could simply reformat my mind (like reformatting a computer hard drive) so that I can fill it anew with the things of God — His grace, love, truth,…
Lord, please help me to set my mind on things above, not on earthly things (Col. 3:1) so that I may not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of my mind (Rom. 12:2) !

Thanks for posting. Reminds me of the book “God is closer than you think” where Ortberg talks about having a “Beautiful Mind”, which is essentially Philippians 4:8; where one’s mind dwells on the truths of God’s words (who He is, Grace, etc). Then it becomes lived out in one’s life with desire to do so.
