Gracepoint Berkeley vs. Austin
July 30, 2008
Already, it’s a Texas shootout. I just got an email from Pastor Manny (Gracepoint Fellowship Church – Austin) about an upcoming basketball tournament (Thursday 7/31, 6pm) that he lined up in Texas. Several brothers from Gracepoint Berkeley (plus two from Waypoint) are visiting Austin and so they set up a California vs. Texas match up. I’m not much of a b-ball player, but I got my money on Texas for this one. Manny is one of the best shooters over 39 years old, and John is one of the most consistent chaos-theory shooter/passer/dribbler (sometimes you don’t know if he was taking a shot or passing or dribbling or all of the above).
After the game Thursday night, they’re going to Rudy’s BBQ. And before their Friday Bible study, they’re having Korean BBQ. Didn’t Apostle Paul write about not eating two BBQ’s within a 24 hour period? I guess being a pastor in Texas does have some perks… Manny, when are you going to invite me out to Texas to eat (I mean) speak?
Also, they’re going to have their first Sunday Worship Service this Sunday! If any of you have any friends, distant cousins, or long-lost friends from kindergarten within a 50 mile radius of Austin city limits, please tell them to go and check it out: 408 W. 23rd St., Austin, TX 78705 (3pm).
By the way, we’re sending them our custom-made wooden pulpit podium from Davis. It was the podium that we used for the bulk of our church plant here in Davis. It’s very special because it’s foldable, portable, and was custom-sized for standard height preachers like me and Timothy. So Manny, you’ll look really tall using our podium…but maybe that’s why you wanted us to send it to you.
UPDATE: Here are some pictures hot off the hot and humid Austin press:

Just got word that they had 6 guests at the first church service of Gracepoint Austin where Pastor Manny gave a message on Nehemiah 1. And on Friday, they had 13 people attend as well! Praise God! But they didn’t say who won the Gracepoint Berkeley vs. Austin basketball tournament…could it be that Cal beat Texas?

Alas, no. Perhaps someday, in our dreams, or in heaven…

We had enough for two Cal teams and two Texas teams. They divided themselves up evenly, so that Texas beat Cal both games. Thankfully, that was just a warm-up to 20 points (each basket either 2 or 3 points).
Then we had our final match of the best of the best (reminiscent of the not-so-authentic-Tex-mex Chevy’s). We pitted the best of Cal vs. best of Texas, with subs, to a game of 30 points. And the winner…Cal defeated Texas by 5 points or so.
So that says it all !

I stand corrected! Congratulations!

Just got word that some of our Waypoint members will be visiting Gracepoint Fellowship Church – Austin in a week to help out for a few days. It’s exciting to see how we’re able to serve together!
