An Ode to Sam

May 23, 2009

Last night, after Koinonia Bible study, the guys went to play basketball.  The “oldies team” beat the undergrads in a very close game!  As we headed home, I was inspired to write a poem after seeing Sam in the dimly lit parking lot leaning against his minivan as captured in this picture and poem…

Sam...

An Old too Sam :)

I know a man called Sam,

he is a man who can!

He was a Superman,

but push a minivan??

He thrilled this B-Ball fan,

but leg cramped up — oh man!

I know a man called Sam,

he’s now an old, old man.

Sam, be sure to stretch before you fly in the sky again.  Welcome to the oldies team!  :)

Team Sam baby! That shot was very “Lebron-esque”

Go Team Sam! He earned the right to have a cramp after his MVP performance and nailed the game winning shot! =)

I know that man called Sam

    And truly honored I am.

    While lesser men might fall,

    This man Sam stands tall.

    Not just in basketball,

    But as well in everything,

    He always gives his all.

    So with confidence we’ll sing,

    “Team Sam: Yes we can!”

A Poem to our Oldies MVP:

I know a man called Super Sam

Sports fans cheered, the old old man
All cheered and screamed “Yes you can”
    Moments before the end began

I saw Sam had it all planned

Saw him took a quick last scan
A screened pass that Sam had planned
Made the jumper and hoped it land

I held my breath as we scanned

Sam made the winning shot land
And the crowd went crazy man
Men cheered and ran towards old Sam

I am now a fan of Sam

Sam proved how he is the man
And now he has some sports fans
More than Shaq, Kobe and Jordan fans

I know a man called Super Sam

    Sam is a man
    who understands
what it takes to make a clutch shot
and come home with a bam!

    Not just skills but theatrics
    someone who has tricks
    up his sleeve
when the time comes for him again

He just pops up behind you
when you don’t even know it
He just pulls up a fancy move
when he don’t have to show it

Trying to be like ‘bron james
with the chalk to start the game
Trying to be like jason kidd
    blowing kisses to the rim

    This is what I mean
when i said he has theatrics
    but the fact is
he got something more than tactics

he got God on his side
the one and only to confide
even the philistines can’t touch him
if they ever want to try

Not a superman or super sam
    But a Jonathan
    Only through God
can he win against the odds. AMEN!

I didn’t know we had so many poets in our church. Sam must have indeed been amazing to have so many people writing poems about him. =) Looking forward to the next brothers basketball fellowship time.

I’d like to hear what Sam thinks about all this talk about his age. :)
