Wk 2: R & R (Read & Read)
June 27, 2009
This past week just flew by! Here’s a sampling of our daily routine for your amusement:
- Go to the Rec Center to exercise for an hour.
- Eat & hit the books at the library for 5 hours straight.
- Eat & go back to the library for another 5!
You might be wondering, “What kind of torturous R & R is that? I thought a Sabbatical was supposed to be rest & relaxation?“
Well, in case you don’t know, we are professional nerds to the n-th degree. In fact, we rank in the top 95.7th percentile of nerds and are diagnosed with HBS (“Heavy Butt Syndrome”). When we study, we feel God’s pleasure! We’re thoroughly enjoying our R & R before our kids arrive in a couple of days. And when they arrive, they’ll sit with us and join in the family fun as Kristen studies for the PSAT and Taylor his LSAT.
Honestly, we’ve been really enjoying our time reading and reading. We’ve been plowing through the Bible and are half way through. Since I’m an audio-reader, I listen to an mp3 of the Bible while reading/highlighting the text on my Bible. It allows me to keep a good pace, especially through all the tricky pronunciations of names. Before each book, I get a nice overview from How to Read the Bible Book by Book: A Guided Tour by Gordon Fee & Douglas Stuart. And while I am on the treadmill, I listen to Old Testament Survey Class Lectures by Dr. Stuart (I took his class during seminary but it is available free through http://www.biblicaltraining.org).
We also finished some secular books that have interesting implications for ministry and leadership: Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink and The Tipping Point (we became fans after his Outliers). Perhaps even more relevant is Dr. Henry Cloud’s Integrity: The Courage to Meet the Demands of Reality (which I read in one sitting on my Kindle). But don’t let the title fool you; it is actually more than just ethical or moral integrity. Integrity is about the kind of character that:
1. Creates and maintains trust
2. Is able to see and face reality
3. Works in a way that brings results
4. Embraces negative realities and solves them
5. Causes growth and increase
6. Achieves transcendence and meaning in life
There are a lot of lessons that I need to apply to my life and ministry and I’m sure I’ll be posting more about it later.
We’re having other fun as well. Once in a while we watch an episode of The Waltons (yes John-Boy, it’s that old 1970’s TV show!). I grew up watching that when I was a kid, and so I bought the DVD of the first season a while back so that our kids would know why I like to wear old-fashioned clothing! We also ventured out to Chinatown and had a blast at Yaohan plaza (which is Ranch 99 raised to the 3rd power). Susanna found all kinds of exotic foods that she remembers from Cambodia. Thankfully, we passed on durian, fresh frog, and soft-shelled turtles.

Just wanted to drop you a comment and say hello, and I hope you actually rest during your sabbatical
It’s amazing what 4 years can do. Kristen is now taller than you o_O or at least that’s how it looks in the picture. Best of wishes to you when she hits those difficult teen years (oh boy those can be rough)
Oh and which version of audio bible are you listening to? I have one, but the mono tone drone puts me to sleep first.
Blessings upon you.

Hi Gary,
It’s good to hear from you! It’s been a long time; hope you are doing well…
Yes, our kids are growing up fast, but pictures are deceiving–I am still the tallest in the family.
The mp3 of the Bible that I listen to has some background music and use different voices so it’s pretty good: http://www.amazon.com/NIV-Dramatized-Audio-Bible/dp/031092264X (ISBN 0-310-92264-x)

Hi P. Joong,
Wow, 10 hours of reading a day! That is incredible. I just had one question: who is taking pictures of you and Susanna while you’re studying? =) Hope all the exercise and reading is helping you “relax”!

Hi Jacob,
The candid picture is with my cell phone camera using a timer. Susanna didn’t know I was taking it but I was taking a break.

Hi Pastor Jonathan and Susanna!
It’s great to read these posts! Feels like we’re right there as well. Taylor is taking his LSAT?! I think I’ve been to the Yaohan Plaza before, it’s huge and lots of goodies. Which library do you study at? The UBC one is “nah-ce”! ( Pastor TImothy recently used it to talk about the new Playfields astroturf…) k, we miss you and praying for you.

Hi Pastor Joong and Susanna SMN!
Here back at Waypoint, at least the frosh staff are trying to get back into the work out regiment. Funny how I was so gung-ho about it, but now not so thrilled, but it’ll be good for me. I hope you both are enjoying your time there and thank you for the updates!!! Boy, reading for R&R, truly God has made us all VERY unique and different
I’m so happy to hear that the sports facilities are working out for you (no pun intended, but not bad eh?

Hi Pastor Jonathan and Susanna! We miss you but it’s great to get a picture of what you are doing from your blogs. I had the same question as Jacob about who’s taking those pictures of the both of you together. I’m glad you have this time to work out and read everyday. Wow, the Rambutan brings back memories of the yummy fresh exotic tropical fruits.

Hey Pastor Jonathan, I’m currently reading Fee and Stuart’s How to Read the Bible For All Its Worth and it’s been great! It was a baptism gift given to me a long time ago, that i’m finally getting around to now. It has definitely helped me appreciate how important (and challenging) hermeneutics can be. Maybe I’ll try the How to Read the Bible Book by Book in the future. Glad to hear things are going great in Vancouver!

Hi Eric,
Yup, that book is the first one that they wrote together and is a good overview of the different genres. Once you are done with it, please do pick up the “Book by Book,” which is based on their OT/NT survey lectures.
