Mind Full of Blessings

Last night, my son’s baseball season came to a sad end for this 2008 season. Their dreams of being the Davis City Champions are dashed, as they came in 4th place in the AAA American League. (4th out of 64 teams is good, but 4th out of 5, … well, they’re a bit bummed.) As I was driving him to his last game, I reminded him (yes, yet again) how blessed he was to have a chance to play Little League, to have uniforms, to have $3 for a hotdog & treats, to go to school, and to have parents who would remind him to be thankful.

No, I didn’t want to give him a guilt trip on that short ride to the park. It’s just that I was especially mindful of the blessings that we have here in Davis, CA 95616/95618, in good ol’ USA. During the day, I had a chance to reflect on how little so much of the world has. One member of Waypoint Community Church came back from a medical mission trip to Honduras with BMDMI.org and I got to browse through a CD of pictures that he brought back — so many faces of kids who would die to have a chance to play in any Little League game, to have any spare clothing, or to have parents. I let those faces stare back at me and speak words of truth that I needed to hear… [this is a public picture from their website:]

Each picture told me that I have been blessed and given much and that I need to be a good and faithful steward of all that I’ve been entrusted with. With each picture, I was reminded of what Jesus said, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked” (Luke 12:48b).

Yes, Lord, demand and ask as You will. I want to be Your good and faithful servant so that I might be a channel of Your blessings…
