Rockin’ Gracepoint Summer Institute

This past weekend, we joined Gracepoint Summer Institute where Dr. Jon Choi spoke (Global Harvest Church, Dallas, TX). He’s an Old Testament scholar and a rockin’ musician with his own band! And it turns out that we’re peers — but I admit that he’s a lot cooler than I. 8)

We spent a couple of days last week with Pastor Ed Kang and Celtics-cheering-pastors, Manny & Timothy. We hiked to Island Lake and played several rounds of rock throwing. No, we we’re impersonating David & Goliath while applying our daily devotionals. 🙂 We were just having good old fun like we used to when we were in kindergarten. Life was easier back then: Pick up a rock, find a target, take aim, and throw it; and if you missed, try again.

And now, we’re all grown up and we’re pastors. Life of a pastor is understandably rockier, and even with five smooth stones, it’s hard to hit your target… That’s why it was so refreshing to spend the time with fellow pastors up in the Sierras, just throwing rocks…and hitting the target once in a while. (BTW, Dr. Jon Choi is also an amazing rock thrower!)

Today, for daily devotion, I memorized Ephesians 2:8-10 as I thought about how pastoring is ultimately a calling dependent on God’s grace:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Lord, thank you for the many good works that you’ve prepared in advance for me to do. Help me to do it wholeheartedly, experiencing the gift of your grace daily…
